Motherhood & Children

I Just Didn’t Know Yet- A poem about motherhood

A poem about motherhood that is incredibly relatable and will pull at your heart strings. #motherhood #poem #creativewriting #childbearing #havingchildren #becomingamother #raisingbabies

I would like to dedicate this poem about motherhood to my firstborn. The one who made me a better woman. I have never been more thankful for anything in my life. Bringing my little boy into the world gave me access to feelings that I never knew existed. I feel so passionately about my baby that I decided to write a special piece just for him.

I just didn’t know yet

I thought I was surprised when the test came back positive.

I just didn’t know yet.

I thought I was surprised hearing your little heartbeat.

I just didn’t know yet.

I thought I was surprised seeing your sweet face on the ultrasound.

I just didn’t know yet.

I thought I was surprised feeling the first big kick.

I just didn’t know yet.

I thought I was surprised seeing a room full of people ready to shower your upcoming arrival.

I just didn’t know yet.

I thought I was surprised at the sight of your finished nursery.

I just didn’t know yet.

I thought I was surprised when the countdown to your due date became weeks instead of months.

I just didn’t know yet.

I thought I was surprised when everyone gathered at the hospital.

I just didn’t know yet.

The truth is, I had never felt a surprise that compared anything to your tiny little hand wrapped around my finger just moments after you made it into the world. I was surprised in a way that words cannot begin to describe. Each day you surprise me more than the day before. I just didn’t know a surprise could fill my world with so much happiness.

The surprise of a lifetime has been realizing my whole world is perfect just being my son’s mother.
