One of the best parts about owning your home is the fact that you can renovate anything in the world that you want.
There is no waiting for the landlord to get back to you on whether or not they’re okay with what you plan on changing.. and possibly being hit with the big N-O!
Home ownership can be a beautiful thing.
My husband and I bought our little starter home in the fall of 2018.
We have had a wonderful experience as homeowners, and now that he has decided to stay in the Army I am ready to break out the power tools!
House flipping can be a grueling task, but now that I know we will be staying in our home, I feel better about making the investment!
The Benefits Of Renovating
Renovating your home doesn’t have to be a pain in the butt, nor does it have to break the bank.
There are many benefits to renovating your home:
- Make your home more comfortable
- Increasing the value of your home
- Make your home more energy efficient
- Keep your home up to date
- Avoid structural damages
I can go on for a long time about the value in renovating your home.
Unless you build your home and make every single decision, then more than likely there will be things you are interested in changing. If you know that you will be living in your home for a long time, then that is even more of a reason to renovate!
Valuable Indoor Home Renovations
Oh the beauty of indoor renovations! You have to live in your home, so you want to make sure that it is comfortable.
Most new homes are sold without the major appliances in the kitchen, but there is a big incentive if they’re included. Including nice appliances in the sale of your home can be strikingly beneficial to attract first time home buyers and military families.
Other upgrades to consider are nice cabinets and countertops. White cabinets are a smart choice for achieving the farmhouse feel, but dark cabinets hide sticky finger prints.. The same goes for countertops.
Kitchens are a home staple, so invest in them!
Throw out the matching pink tub and toilet… It is time to update!
White tubs and toilets are always a safe choice. While white tubs are nice, avoid white tile and grout. The minute things start to mold, there is no going back. Bath tubs are big for families with children, but large showers are the go-to for couples without kids.
A simple bathroom paint job can improve the look and feel drastically. Soft, smooth colors are good for home sales. You can also check prices on re-painting your current tub. My parents chose this route, and it looked great for a few years. You do have to be incredibly careful with what cleaning chemicals you use after painting your tub because it will begin peeling. Painting your tub does not last as long as a replacement, of course.
Always check out the current styles before you renovate.
Hardwood floors add value to homes, but only if they are in good condition! Unless you plan on providing your buyers with a budget for floor replacements after they complete the home, then you need to change them while you own it. It could be a turning factor in the sale of your home if they buyers are looking to move in without having to do such a large renovation.
Get your flooring from a reputable company, so you are not replacing it multiple times throughout the life of your home. Brazilian Wood Depot, a company that I mention further along in this article, is a wonderful example of a reputable company to use. Their products are outstanding, and they ship almost anywhere!
The possibilities are limitless with your options for valuable indoor home renovations.

Valuable Outdoor Home Renovations
Outdoor renovations are wonderful for resale value because they catch the eye of potential buyers when they merely drive by! It doesn’t matter if your home is not currently open for showings when you have made eye-catching valuable renovations outdoors.
If you don’t have a deck or patio, then you should consider adding one! Decks are a big ticket item, but they often recoup over 75% of their initial cost towards a home’s resale value. If you want your deck to be a worthwhile investment, then you should buy your supplies from Brazilian Wood Depot. They offer Cumaru decking out of their Atlanta location; it is one of the hardest and most durable woods available.
Can’t you see yourself enjoying your morning coffee while bird watching from your back porch?
Siding your home is an extremely expensive endeavor, but it is top notch in the way of valuable home renovations. Purchasing brand new siding for your home gives it a better street appeal as well as making your house better insulated. Deciding to have your property re-sided is a wonderful way to make sure that the wood underneath is free of rot and bugs.
Do you know what year your home was built? Older homes, ones that were built before 1996, may have masonite siding. Masonite siding was ruled as unfit for homes in a class action lawsuit in 1996. You definitely don’t want to have siding on your home that was outlawed!
If you decide that siding isn’t for you, then you can add brick or stone to your home. They’re very easy to clean, and resist rot much better than vinyl siding.
There are a limited number of yard renovations that are truly valuable to the resale value of a house.
Pools do add to resale value, but they are also a big expense and liability on homeowners. Not only do you have to worry about upkeep on the concrete and lining of the pool, but the expense of chemicals and water. Pools are also extremely dangerous for homeowners with children, so you need to ensure the area is fenced in.
An outdoor upgrade that holds its value long-term is tree removal. Removing large trees that are extremely close to your house is a good decision for the value of your home as well as avoiding ‘the talk’ from your home insurer. Did you know that an insurance company can raise your rates or even drop you for tree hazards?
Renovating DIY Style
If you’ve never embarked on a DIY renovation, are you even a homeowner?! You can go ahead and expect to change something in your house whether it is due to a catastrophic event, or by your own choice.
I am a huge fan of DIY, but I also accept the fact that there will be situations where I am not capable of completing the work.
Youtube does not make you a master…
Replacing a light or painting a room is a simple option for a DIY that benefits your home. Homes with more airy and bright rooms tend to sell more quickly that those that feel cramped.
I know that personally I feel less anxiety when my house is bright and uncluttered!
Renovating With Contractors
Renovating with contractors is typically more expensive because you have to pay labor costs, but it surely has its benefits!
- Guaranteed timeline for completion
- You get to sit back and enjoy the results
- Things are done correctly
Make sure that you do a lot of research on the contractors that you intend to use. Take your time getting quotes for the work you want done. The most expensive quote does not always equal out to the best work done. Using licensed and insured contractors is a smart choice.
Remember, the goal of renovations is to add value to your home as well as making it more comfortable for your family!
